Saint Rose of Lima

Saint Rose of Lima was born in Peru in the late 16th century. As a young woman, she sought to destroy her beauty to avoid the attentions of young men. She took up fasting and a series of penances, and filled her days looking after the sick and impoverished. At all other times she was virtually a recluse, and although forbidden by her parents to become a nun, she entered the Third Order of St. Dominic and took a vow of perpetual virginity.

She died on August 24th, 1617, at the age of 31. Many miracles followed her death and she was canonized in 1671.
