Saint Teresa of Ávila is another very popular female saint. Born in Spain, she entered a
Carmelite monastery at the age of 20 where she studied ascetic mysticism. She founded her own strict
Carmelite order in 1562 which practiced absolute poverty and ceremonial flagellation.
Her feast day is celebrated on October 15th.
